Save save readers of Culture in weight! Continuing in my column on hardcore, this time I bring to you two reviews.
First, the book Dance of Days, which has all the appearance of the hc scene in Washington DC. And following the review of the latest cd from Bad Brains, that band
is among the most prominent in the book Dance of Days and was responsible for the explosion of a motto of "Do It Yourself" in the scene independent of the time.
Enjoy!
Dance of Days - Two Decade Of Punk In The Nation's Capital
Authors: Mark Andersen and Mark Jenkins::: Genre: Documentary
Finally a book devoted to the Washington DC punk scene, which became one of the most influential in the alternative scenario world. Written by Mark Andersen, local activist
and (yet) member of Positive Force and the writer Mark Jenkins, Dance Of Days portrays the emergence of bands like Bad Brains, Minor Threat, fugitive, Bikini Kill and all the
that rolava around the punk scene in the season as the organization Positive Force, the label Dischord Records and the emergence of the term / movement Straight Edge. But what predominates
the spirit is "do it yourself" that was the main cause of everything that happened. Not only the will to see things happen, but also and mainly, the attitude of
up and do something. This book shows all the changes and transformations of the movement that began as something alternative and underground and in the years
90 invaded the media and sank in the mainstream as spoken. Details of training and changes in the bands, getting gigs and festivals, conflicts, revolutions, protests,
are depicted with great care and, together with several photographs of the time, give a very special touch to this work. A lesson for those who have some interest in music,
alternative culture and everything that revolves around the issue, as this fanzine that you have on hand. Indispensable!
"Ask them: What is real? What I have to do? Where my life is taking me? As I believe, what I want? If this is a chance for everyone, not just
some, to live, really live, not only there, well, for me this is punk. "Mark Andersen.
Bad Brains - Build A Nation (Megaforce Records / 2007) --- What about that band? Almost 30 years after his appearance in Washington DC, the Rastafarian punks are back,
and the best, with its original formation. Produced by none less than Adam Yauch (Beastie Boys), the album has 14 tracks that show the good old mix of punk and reggae
characteristic of the band, with total energy, showing that they still have very much gas and inspiration. The voice of HR is up to hipnotizante sometimes.
Emphasis on title track, "Jah People Make The World Round" (name appears to reggae, but a furious punk) and "Jah People", a reggae fodasso making any swing
some part of the body (or it all). Essential! "Until kingdom comes, let the children's heart beat the one!"
March Paulo Henriques is advertising, drummer of the band U-Ganga, editor of the zine Empty Pages and owner of the seal / distro Fire Records (markopaulo3@hotmail.com.br)
