Interview held on 23/10/2009
Made by Laurencce Martins and Luis Felipe
With Joca Ribeiro and Mark Sanchez
Here is Laurencce Martins along with Louis Philippe, the session of Death Metal Culture in weight, now covering the Jambolada 2009, one of the largest independent music festivals in the country. Let's talk now with one of the bands that have achieved a national support, which recently launched its first full-length and that tomorrow will share the stage with none other than the grave. I'm referring to the band Krow.
Laurencce: Starting with the classic question, what is the expected pro show tomorrow?
Mark: The expectation is great, I think for us to be playing at a festival that already has some national renown as well as playing with a band I grew up, which is the grave. So we have to show why we're on the scene here.
Laurencce: And how does it feel, or what you are feeling, playing with this band of renown is the grave?
Joca: Say that we're not nervous would be a lie (laughs). We're nervous as hell, but it is a "nervous" in terms of "anxious". We are willing to go on stage, we are in the gut, in the madness. We go and do the best show of our lives and show my buddies that we are here to grow and not to die. And we are very proud to play with the guys (Sepultura), as they are here, are of Mines. And that, here in Brazil and abroad, only grows, to say: "Minas Gerais has extreme metal." Satanic Famous Triangle Mineiro (laughs). Then, there are several bands giants, only Sepultura and Sarcofago are legends, and we play with one of these legends is a business that is difficult to describe.
Laurencce: The Krow is a relatively new band, but you are starting to gain traction in the national and international scene, since you already have a tour planned in Chile. How can look back and see the rapid rise that you had in the scene?
Mark: I think that is a result of a lot of guts. We embraced the cause, and we talk to ourselves: "is what we want, then we have to give blood". So it's business is holding, in relation to time, invest money, it does not help you stand in your room that things will not happen. And I feel very proud to start growing in the Triangle the same scenario. It is a pride, man, it has a lot of good bands here, and we are at a very good crop of bands, and a part of it is cool and amazing, to tell the truth.
Laurencce: How is the reception of Before the Ashes?
Joca: Man, Before the Ashes was released in August. We went to Fortaleza and played a festival there (somewhat Forcaos), along with Funeratus, which is a band of old, the Taurus too, and Violator, Mococa the city, the city is one of our stamps (FreeMind) great "Balan. And then, man, I see so few songs that you thought would be the strongest of the disc to the public just is not. Then some other songs the audience thinks much more interesting than we thought it would be. And that's fucking, man. It has been very well received, we have several positive reviews on the Internet, and it even scares me a little because we have not had one negative review ... I think these reviews are all lies but that's okay (laughs). We are very pleased and it only encourages more people to work harder and create more. We'll keep working and now Before the Ashes out what it is in the vein.
Laurencce: You just released a new Before the Ashes. The band focuses only on that work or is already planning future work? How does this dynamic?
Joca: Well, this is not as well planned. We are starting the tour "Before the Ashes, which began in Fortaleza, here in Uberlandia, will pass through Chile, has some other dates have closed here in the state of Minas Gerais and Sao Paulo to the north again, we have a tour that has not closed the North, but that can happen and that I find very interesting because it has a very strong scene there. So we're very focused on this CD release, but since our songs are usually created from everyday events, this will mean that happening naturally. You travel, you see something, watch a news ...
Laurencce: Stuff from the everyday world, this is the theme of Krow?
Joca: This is the theme of Krow, we comment and give our opinion about things that happen in everyday life. It is constructive criticism or destructive, depending on the event, about the things of our everyday lives.
Mark: Not to mention that during the tests we always try to do something different. You know what, we're playing there and now comes a new basis and there is going ...
Joca: You create a letter and such, and has a base there ... Then, during the test when it rehearses two to three times a week at a time that you're "nonsense", comes a new thing, someone sends a riff there, and you think, "it gives a new music" , and then flows ...
Louis Philippe: How do you tell the maturation (as musicians and as human beings) when you look back?
Mark: Dude, you look back and see so much that has passed, you are living, and you stop to think about it. And I think, man, everything you spend in life, even the bad experiences, you have to add something in your life. Neither the bad things that happen should you fail to learn something good. So this is really cool, is cool! It's fuck you look at what happened in the past and you will reap in the future, is spectacular.
Joca: I realize that in terms of evolution, this maturation is closely linked to his life at that time. We create the songs that are linked directly with our lives, with mine, Mark, of William and Sapão (Raphael). The experiences that we have become more complex, more interesting, more intriguing and more challenging. You can hear the music of Krow and perceives that ripening until the technical side, because like it or not, no one stopped practicing ... And every time we grow more as a person, our music also evolves, or at least is different, I do not know (laughs), you can even get worse, but it's different (laughs).
Laurencce: Beyond the grave, what are the musical influences of Krow?
Joca: (laughs) Wow, dude, it's a lot of bandwidth ... Kreator, Destruction, Morbid Angel ...
Mark: Man, it's Vader is Slayer, Sarcofago, Possessed, we will talk until tomorrow here on the bands that influence us (laughs) ... In general, we are influenced by Thrash and Death Metal
Laurencce: Is there any band that is stronger for you?
Mark: Yeah, man, are actually three bands. The Behemoth, Slayer and Vader, which is the root of the band. The tree (Krow) grew these bands there.
Joca: The law is also that all of the band like to know something new.
Laurencce: You focus only on the metal and get something out as well?
Joca: Each has its own style, but we listen to everything, like punk, hardcore, heavy metal to black metal ...
Laurencce: And there's something out of that aspect of heavy music?
Mark: Yes, there the Blues for example, we hear a lot. In our music has taken a lot of Blues. Without leaving aside also the influence of Brazilian music ... and the grave has taken that "middle samba" ... We search it too ... this mixture of Brazil.
Joca: Because, man, if you're here in Brazil and knows baião, knows samba, forró know, and all these styles very regional, you will not make a sound Polish. You have to put their roots in the sound, even though they're details, I think it's extremely important and that gives richness in music. Man, and in terms of Rock N 'Roll, we listen to everything, but whenever we can get something out, we'll be playing.
Luis Felipe: Joca, what is your personal influence, since the lines of the battery Before the Ashes are out of joint (laughs)?
Joca: (laughs), man, I very Influencer by drummers like John Bonham, of our beloved Led Zeppelin, Dave Lombardo ... talking like that, only the guys out ... Has huge drummers as "Hell" of the behemoth, Daray of Vader ... I do not like them, but you end up creating something like that, because it is in your sub-conscious. I hear a lot of jazz, blues, and things out of metal I like to listen. The case of metal "podreira", these guys have mentioned, it is difficult not to be influenced by them ... Even our beloved Manu, Manuel who played great in the sarcophagus, affects me like hell, old man. The guys invent "Blast beat" at that time, if it does not affect you ...
Laurencce: Do you believe in luck?
Mark: Sure (laughs) ...
Joca: (laughs), I believe I must. But I think it is the following. Their fate is influenced by what you do. It's no good standing still at home, that luck will not find you. Have to chase. As in our case, everyone has their job and chases. As I said once to the "Baron" there in his program, "as the rock does not pay me, I have to pay my rock", is not it? (laughs). So everybody here runs ago, has his job ... only that, man, you have to work like a madman, like a dog. I believe in luck, but you have to work for her to find you.
Laurencce: To close, leave a message of pro personnel Culture in weight for the "headbangers" from Brazil and pro personnel who enjoys Krow.
Joca: TRIANGLE SATANIC MINEEEEIRO (laughs) ...
Mark: (laughs) ... I'd say that (laughs) ... I want to leave a hug all you guys are reading here, and say that we have to value the bands of Minas Gerais and Brazil.
Joca: There's so much good here. Some people attach great importance just to gringo. Gringo has much that is fucking, but here is also very expensive which makes sound fucked up. Let's support for those who are here, because here is real metal.
Mark: The difference of Brazilian European pro is that they already have everything ready. Here we have to work, give blood, as in construction (laughs), sweating, is twice the effort ... That's right, a hug you guys and thanks too brotheeeeer, thanks cousin!
Laurencce: Thanks guys, thanks for the interview and good "luck" in the journey of you.
Louis Philippe: Thanks to staff and the next.
